Giuseppe Pizzeria and Sicilian Roast: Authentic Italian Restaurant in Panglao Island (Bohol)
Last summer, my wife and I went to Bohol, an island-province in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. The island is best known for its Chocolate Hills, a collective of grassy hills that turn brown during the dry season, and Philippine Tarsiers, the second smallest primates in the world. I only see these in my grade school textbooks. Finally, I saw it with my very own eyes.
We stayed in Panglao, an island in southwest Bohol. It’s known for its white beaches and clear waters, and has increasingly become a top tourist destination in the recent years.
Since we’re on vacation with family and relatives, we weren’t able to fully explore its food scene. However, we made sure that we got to eat at some of the island’s top food spots. So for the next three weeks, I’ll be featuring these spots, starting with an authentic Italian restaurant in Panglao—Giuseppe Pizzeria and Sicilian Roast.
Giuseppe is consistently listed in Bohol’s best restaurants list. It is named after its owner, Giuseppe Genco, an Italian chef who has worked at several 5-star hotels. So you’ll know that you’ll only get authentic and top-notch Italian food at Giuseppe.
They have a wood-fired brick oven, which produces excellent pizzas.
We tried their Gregorio pizza (if I’m not mistaken), which has tomato, mozzarella cheese, smoked ham, mixed sausages, and Parma ham. The tomatoes give a bright taste, and the crust is nicely crisp, chewy, and charred.
I can’t wait to go back and try their other pizzas!
Of course, our Italian meal should include pasta. So we tried their Spaghetti Carbonara because it’s made the traditional way—with egg yolk instead of cream that Filipinos are used to (though their recipe still has cream). It’s rich and creamy!
I couldn’t pass on the Squid Ink Pasta. It’s made with al dente pasta covered with a sauce that’s garlicky and has the perfect squid ink flavor.
For the mains, we got the Roast Chicken, which is flavorful, with rosemary as the prominent taste. But I wished that the vegetables were more seasoned.
Giuseppe truly makes authentic and amazing Italian dishes. We also loved its chill atmosphere, and we can’t wait to go back and try their other dishes. I highly recommend this place to you!
