Hong Kong was formerly a British colony until its handover to China in 1997. That’s why we can see traces of British influence in transportation (double decker buses and trams), legal system, and food, among many others.

In terms of food, we will see the fusion of Western and Chinese influences in Cha Chaan Tengs. Literally “tea restaurants”, cha chaan tengs are Hong Kong-style cafes that serve local breakfast classics such as egg tarts, macaroni/spaghetti soup, sandwiches, and the iconic Hong Kong-style milk tea.

One of the most popular cha chaan tengs in HK is Australia Dairy Company. Contrary to what its name suggests, the cha chaan teng is not from the Down Under nor specializes on dairy products. In fact, there’s really nothing Aussie about it.

So why the name? I’ve read several accounts in the Internet and it seems that the reason is this: It’s an homage to the founder’s stint of working for a dairy farm in Australia.

Anyway, Australia Dairy Company is known for its scrambled eggs…and its rude service. So is it really that bad? We went to find out!

Inside Australia Dairy Company

Let’s talk about the food first. We’re supposed to order their bestselling Breakfast Set. But it’s only available until noon and we arrived at almost 3PM. So we had the Lunch Set instead. It’s composed of bread or toast with butter; ham and a choice of fried or scrambled eggs; spaghetti chicken soup with a choice of barbecue pork, beef, or ham; and coffee or milk tea (the Breakfast Set has no ham, and it’s macaroni soup instead of spaghetti).

Of course, I got the scrambled eggs, which is creamy and on the wet side, and also a bit saltier than expected (food in Hong Kong, for me, tends to be on the undersalted side). Now I understand what the hype is about! It’s nicely paired with their fluffy bread.

The spaghetti chicken soup has a tasty and comforting broth, and soft pasta.

My wife got Butter and Peanut Butter Toasts, which are perfectly toasted. Australia Dairy Company really knows how to serve bread!

Of course, we ordered their Cold Milk Tea, which is sweeter than the ones we tried in other food spots.

So is the service really rude? Well, we didn’t experience it ourselves. But if it really is, I honestly think that it’s just the standard Hong Kong hospitality—rude but efficient. LOL.

But is Australia Dairy Company worth going to? Absolutely! They make simple breakfast food done excellently, in my opinion. I highly recommend it to you!

P.S. I’m excited to try more cha chaan tengs in the future!
