There are plenty of night markets around Penang. These pasar malam, as it’s locally called, are full of energy and good food. We went to a popular one, which is Kimberley Street Food Night Market in George Town.

Kimberley Street Food Night Market

We first went there on Thursday night at around 10PM. Since it’s a night market, we thought it would end late. Unfortunately, many of the stalls have already closed. We’re not sure if it’s because of the day or we arrived too late. So we went at another day (a Saturday) and an earlier time, and were welcomed by a vibrant atmosphere.

We went straight to what is possibly the most popular hawker in the night market—Kimberley Street Duck Kway Chap. It’s hard to miss it because of its long (but fast) queue.

Kimberley Street Duck Kway Chap

Kway Chap is a Teochew (a Chinese ethno-linguistic group) dish composed of rice noodles (“kway”) and a bowl of broth (“chap”). Depending on the region, it can be accompanied by braised duck, duck/pig innards, and other sides.

We got the Mix Platter, which has duck meat, pig innards (ears and intestines), pig skin, braised egg, and blood jelly.

But before we could eat our kway chap, we had to find seats. One of the way to get a table is to go to one of the restaurants and order their drinks. This is the practice here so there’s no need to worry.

We went to Restoran Kimberly, which is just behind the kway chap stall (I’m not sure if it’s related to the kway chap stall), and ordered a lemon drink and a Teh Tarik (pulled milk tea):

Left to Right: Lemon Drink (I forgot what it’s exactly called) and Teh Tarik

So how’s the kway chap? The duck could be more tender, the innards and blood jelly add texture, and the egg is nicely chewy and its yolk creamy. While it’s not advertised, I think there’s also pork in it, which is tender but still has a nice bite.

The kway chap is like the soy sauce version of sopas, a Filipino soup with a milk-based broth and macaroni. The rice noodles are like macaroni—soft and smooth.

I must say that our kway chap meal was enjoyable, especially when I dipped every item on the sweet, spicy, and tangy chili. But being a Filipino with the belief that “rice if life”, this meal would be better with rice. I’m glad that my wife got a bowl of rice because it’s simply amazing with the duck meat and pig parts!

Of course, we didn’t just settle for kway chap. We also tried the Oyster Omelette from this stall (the stall name is in Chinese so I’m not sure if it’s named Fried Oyster or something else):

Left to Right: The Oyster Omelette Stall and Lorong Susu Specialist BBQ

They oysters are plump, the eggs are creamy, and the entire dish is smoky. We’re amazed that we hit a jackpot with this random stall (we didn’t plan the food that we’ll be eating at Kimberley Street Food Night Market).

Behind the omelette hawker is a roast meat stall called Lorong Susu Specialist BBQ. We hardly ate any pork in Penang so we took this opportunity to eat it!

We got the Roast Pork, which the hawker re-grilled upon order. It has a crunchy and salty skin, melty fat, and tender and juicy meat. It’s really good.! And I assure you that it’s not because we were pork-deprived for the past few days! LOL.

We also got the Char Siu (barbecued pork), which my wife really loved and it’s the best version she has had. According to her, its barbecued really well and has a nice caramelization.

It’s too bad that we were kind of full when we went to Kimberley Street Food Night Market so we couldn’t try more dishes. But with the three dishes we had, we could tell that the street food in the night market are good. It may be standard for the locals, but it’s good enough for tourists like us.

Kimberley Street Food Night Market is a must-visit when you’re in George Town. I highly recommend you pay it a visit!
