What do Luke Martin (of Chopstick Travel), Trevor James (a.k.a. The Food Ranger), and Mark Wiens all have in common? Aside from the fact that they are top food vloggers, they all visited the same food spot outside Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. This food spot serves Itik Salai or smoked duck, and is consistently receiving high praise from diners and food vloggers alike. This spot is Itik Salai Mashtar.

Itik Salai Mashtar

Located south of KL in Selangor (the state surrounding the Malaysian capital), Itik Salai Mashtar specializes in smoked duck curry. I’ve been wanting to visit Itik Salai Mashtar since I watched it featured by my favorite food vloggers. So it’s on the top of my list when I returned to KL! But is it worth the drive? Let me share our experience.

Look at those smoked ducks! Yum!

We went on a Monday and arrived at 3:25PM. I was concerned that the food may have already been sold out by this time. Thankfully, there’s still food. As we’re leaving, I saw that they were smoking another batch of beef and ducks.

They smoke their meats using coconuts:

That’s blazing hot!

We were able to order quickly. We got their bestselling Daging (beef) and Itik (duck) Masak Lemak or curry made with coconut milk, turmeric, and chilies.

The Menu of Itik Salai Mashtar

Masak Lemak

The itik masak lemak has a flavorful, spicy, and coconutty curry. I like that the curry has the perfect thickness, and it’s best to drench your rice with it!

The duck is tender, juicy, and smoky, and its skin is rich and fatty! It’s one of the better ducks I’ve ever eaten!

The daging masak lemak uses the same curry, and the beef is smoky and on the tougher side like a jerky. While I was hoping for a juicy and tender pieces of beef, it’s still good.

We paired our curries with fresh ulam or herbs/vegetables. They add crunch and freshness to the meal.

Itik Salai Mashtar are also famous for their Keli or catfish. But we were not in the mood for it so we’ll try it next time.

So is Itik Salai Mashtar worth driving for? Absolutely! They have amazing smoked ducks and Malay curries. Next time, we will try the smoked meats without the curry (it’s unavailable during our visit). Needless to say, I highly recommend Itik Salai Mashtar to you!

P.S. After having a wonderful meal, head over to Kuih Keria Gula Melaka Sg Ramal (article coming soon!), which is just less than a minute walk from Itik Salai Mashtar. They serve good Malay kuih or handmade sweets/snacks.
