Pufft Doughnuts: Your Source of Strawberry and Leche Flan Doughnuts

My earliest memories of doughnuts were times when my parents brought home Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts, the donut brand famously dubbed as the “Pasalubong ng Bayan” (the “souvenir of the nation”, for a lack of better translation). When I was a bit older, my dad would bring my brother and I to Mister Donut in Greenhills Shopping Center, as we wait for our mom work on the family business. We would order a box of doughnuts, which me and my brother would easily finish.

The coming of international brands Krispy Kreme and Tim Hortons and the rise of artisanal doughnut stores such as Poison brought happiness to my heart. Needless to say, I LOVE DOUGHNUTS!

So when I learned about the Strawberry Donuts of The Donut Man in Glendale, California, and the Leche Flan Donut of Kora in New York City, I can’t help but drool and say, in Homer Simpson voice, “Mmmm, doughnuts!” while simultaneously asking myself, “Where can I get these in Manila?!”

Then one day, Instagram began showing me where to get them. Coincidence? More of algorithm! LOL.

So I gave in to Instagram’s lure and ordered from Pufft Doughnuts, a cloud bakery by Chef Meg who has 16 years of culinary experience across London and Manila. They accept orders only for Wednesdays and Saturdays (more details below).

Let’s now talk about their bestselling doughnuts, starting with the Strawberry Monst. At first glance, I immediately thought that Pufft doesn’t skimp on the ingredients as the strawberries were overflowing. They were rightly sweetened and nicely tart, sandwiched between soft and chewy dough. Overall, the entire doughnut was perfectly sweet and I love it!

Another favorite is the Leche Flan Doughnut, which was only available for a limited time. Pufft’s version had a creamy and silky flan sitting on a sweet leche purée, both sitting on a nicely chewy doughnut. For leche flan and doughnut lovers like me, this a match made in heaven! And Pufft, please bring this back!

If you want your doughnut classic and simple, Pufft also offers filled and frosted doughnuts available in different varieties, which change regularly. For the filled doughnuts, I’ve tried the Banoffee, Lemon Curd with Peanut Brittle, and Milk Chocolate so far. I like all the flavors but Banoffee is my favorite. Imagine eating the pie but in doughnut form!

For the frosted ones, my favorite is the Cookie Butter Blondie. I didn’t expect it to have a filling (and a lot of it!) but that’s a pleasant surprise. The filling had a nice caramel, cookie butter taste and the frosting had white chocolate crumbs with a hint of saltiness, contrasting well with the overall sweetness of the doughnut.
