Sundays Cafe and Restaurant: A Neighborhood Restaurant in Marikina City Serving Comfort and Filipino Food
Lately, I’ve been trying more and more restaurants that serve comfort food. One recent discovery is Sundays Cafe and Restaurant, which is fairly new restaurant in Marikina City. It only opened last year. We went there recently to celebrate a birthday.
Sundays has 2 areas—a cafe and a restaurant—and 2 menus—one for comfort food and another for Filipino food. But whichever area you go to, you can order items from either the cafe or restaurant.
We ordered items from both menus. From the comfort food menu, we ordered the Rock Shrimp in Rock Sauce and Sundays Cereal Fried Chicken and Waffles. My wife and I are allergic to shrimp so we couldn’t comment on it. LOL. But those who are with us say it’s good.
The cereal fried chicken are made with juicy, tender thighs covered with crispy cereal coating. Though I wished it’s spicier because it’s cereal chicken (a Singaporean-inspired dish). Nonetheless, it’s a good dish.
We ordered more from the Filipino menu. For appetizer, we got the Poqui Poqui Roll, which is basically Poqui Poqui (Ilocano dish made with grilled eggplant and scrambled eggs), but in Lumpiang Shanghai (Filipino deep-fried spring rolls) form. The rolls have a smoky, mushy eggplant filling wrapped with crispy wrapper.
Another appetizer that we got is the Sundays Crispy Sisig (traditionally a dish made of chopped pig ears/cheeks and chicken liver, mixed with onions and seasoned with calamansi and chili). Their version is crispy and chewy, has a sweet and tangy dressing, and is spicy because of the chilies. Honestly, it’s not the kind of sisig that I like but my wife loves it.

Now let’s talk about the mains, starting with the Crispy Tadyang (beef ribs). The beef is tasty but on the salty side. Unfortunately, it’s coating was soggy. For its price, it’s disappointing.
But the Inihaw na Pusit Binusog (grilled, stuffed squid) made up for the disappointing beef ribs. It’s rightly cooked, nicely charred, and has a juicy stuffing because of the tomatoes. This is one of my favorites in Sundays!
But my top choice would be the Sundays Beef Kare Kare (peanut stew). It has soft beef and tripe, which contrasts with the crisp veggies. But the winner is the sauce, because it’s creamy and nutty (I think it’s my first time to taste peanuts in kare kare sauce). This is easily the best kare kate I have ever tried!
For dessert, we tried the Sundays Knickerbocker. To the uninitiated, a Knickerbocker is like Zamboanga’s version of the halo-halo, the famous Filipino shaved ice dessert sans the shaved ice. It has ice cream, fresh fruits, and jellies.
Sundays Knickerbocker has apples, banana, and tart mangoes. It also has two kinds of soft jello, and one I believe is flavored (with strawberry o something fruity). When the strawberry ice cream melts and mixes with the other ingredients, it’s just heavenly!
They also have good cakes. My favorites are the Sundays Chocolate Temptation, which is moist and fudgy, and the Strawberry Shortcake, which has a nice strawberry flavor and real strawberry bits.
Sundays Cafe and Restaurant has a nice ambience and good food. But the best thing at Sundays, for me, is that they have affordable prices, being in Marikina where the prices are lower compared to the other parts of the Metro. So if you’re a family either living in Marikina or willing to drive there, then Sundays is good dining option. I recommend it to you!
