Tamagogo: This Food Spot in The Corner House (San Juan City) Serves Okinawan Onigiri (It’s Simple Yet Delicious!)
I’ve been wanting to visit Japan and explore its capital, Tokyo, and its “kitchen”, Osaka. But aside from these megacities, one of my target destinations is Okinawa, a Japanese prefecture consisting of many islands and is known for its tropical climate.
I’ve done some research on Okinawan cuisine, and one of the popular food items is the Okinawan Onigiri. Onigiri (literally “rice ball”) is made of white rice formed into a triangular shape, filled with a protein, and covered with nori (seaweed wrapper). But the Okinawan kind is like a rice sandwich wrapped in nori.
Thankfully, I don’t have to wait for a trip to Japan (whenever that is!) to try this Okinawan delicacy because a food stall in San Juan City makes it—Tamagogo.
Tamagogo at The Corner House
Located in The Corner House (read my article here), Tamagogo is a stall that specializes in Okinawan onigiri and other Japanese food such as Donburi (rice bowls), Tsukemen (dipping ramen) and Udon (thick wheat flour noodles)/Soba (buckwheat noodles) dishes. But so far, we’ve only tried their Okinawan onigiri.
We first tried their Classic, which has pork (luncheon meat), tamago (egg), and a sauce. The combination of salty luncheon meat, sweet tamago, vinegared sushi rice, and earthy alfalfa sprouts, and tangy Japanese mayo is just amazing!

If you want additional fillings, Tamagogo offers fourteen more options. We tried the Mozzarella which has a mozzarella katsu (deep-fried mozzarella breaded with panko) that’s stretchy (but I wish it’s cheesier), and Spicy Salmon which has a spicy salmon sashimi salad.

I never would’ve thought that Okinawan onigiri, simple as it looks, tastes so delicious! Thanks to Tamagogo, Filipinos now have access to the Okinawan delicacy (and I have more reason to visit Okinawa and try the real thing). While I’ve yet to try other Tamagogo dishes (which looks promising), their Okinawan onigiri is enough reason for you to try it. I highly recommend Tamagogo to you!
