Forty year old broth? Yes, you read that right!

Located in the Ekkamai area, Wattana Panich is an eatery popular for its beef stew that’s been simmering for almost half a decade. It’s run by three generations of a Thai-Chinese family. It’s current owner—Nattapong Kaweenuntawong, who is younger than the family’s stew (LOL)—is actively involved in the business, placing meat and pouring broth into every bowl.

Wattana Panich is housed in a 2-storey double shophouse. Its vibe is both old-school and chaotic, which add to its charm.

Inside Wattana Panich

At the storefront, you’ll be greeted by the “jacuzzi” of the legendary beef stew, which will make you want to order right away.

Look at that “jacuzzi” of beef goodness!

But is the stew safe to eat? Yes, and I’m a proof because I’m still alive and healthy! LOL. Actually, there’s really no need to worry because the stew is not as old as you think. What happens is that when the soup has reduced at the end of the day, the crew transfers it to a pot and simmers it. Then they use it as the base for next day’s batch.

Intermission: Doing a trip to Bangkok soon? Planning to eat a lot of Thai street food and to shop for bargain finds? If yes, then I’m excited for you! But here’s a tip: Don’t travel without an insurance! It’s good to have peace of mind while you’re traveling. So if you’re looking for a travel medical insurance, I highly recommend SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance. It includes coverage for the following:

What I like about Nomad Insurance is the convenience it gives. My wife and I were already en route to the airport for our Thailand trip and we still had not purchased our travel insurance. Thankfully, we were able to secure one from Nomad Insurance with just a few taps on my smartphone!

Aside from convenience, here are the other advantages that Nomad Insurance offers:

Below is their menu. We got their Beef Noodle Soup and I asked for small noodles (you can choose from big, small, and thin). You can also have it dry or with soup. So how did we find it?

Wattana Panich’s Menu

Beef Noodle Soup (THB100)

It’s delicious! The broth is beefy, slightly oily, and has a nice star anise flavor. It has tender beef brisket and beef slices, bouncy beef balls, and smooth noodles. The Chinese celery add crunch.

Smooth Noodles

My wife got the Gao-Lao, which is just like the Beef Noodle Soup minus the noodles. This is for those who want that beefy soup with rice!

Gao-Lao (THB100). The menu says it has rice but we had to pay THB10 for it.

Wattana Panich is known for their goat stew, too. But since we're trying out other food spots during the day of our visit, we weren’t able to try the dish. It’ll definitely be on my list if ever I return.

For me, Wattana Panich is legendary not only because of its forty-plus-old stew but because its dishes are delicious. So drop by for a snack or a meal. I highly recommend it to you!
