One of the must-try Phuketian dishes is Hokkien Mee or Hokkien-style noodles (Hokkien is a Chinese ethno-linguistic group). It’s a stir-fried noodle dish composed of thick egg noodles, pork, seafood, and veggies. I think the closest Filipino counterpart of it is Chami.
I’m supposed to try it at Go La, which is an institution in Phuket City. It is listed by the MICHELIN Guide (though there’s no distinction) and was visited by the Bangkok-based American food vlogger Mark Wiens. Looking at photos of Go La’s Hokkien Mee, I made sure I’d be able to try it.
Unfortunately, it was closed during my two visits—on a Sunday and a Monday. They were really closed on Mondays. But there was no explanation why they were closed on a Sunday. Did they close down for good? Anyway…
That didn’t dampen my hopes of trying Hokkien Mee. I made a search and discovered another spot that specializes on the Phuketian noodle dish, Mee Ton Poe.
Mee Ton Poe is another institution in Phuket City. It’s been serving its signature Hokkien Mee since 1946. If a food spot has been around for such a long time, you know that they’re really good!
So I got their Hokkien Mee, which is also called Mee Ton Poe (Fried Noodle with Pork, Seafood, and Vegetable) in the menu. Don’t get confused!
Its noodles are thick and chewy, which I love.
They loaded this bad boy with ingredients. There are slices of pork, fish cakes, real fish, and squid tentacles (I had the shrimp removed because I’m allergic to it) so imagine the textures. Then the veggies add crunch and the egg add creaminess. Overall, it’s tasty and well-balanced!
The Hokkien Mee is served with shallots on the side; it gives the dish some sharpness.
For an additional fee, you can also put deep-fried pork rinds. I wouldn’t pass on the opportunity so I put some on my bowl. I love the crunch that it gives!
So how do I find Mee Ton Poe’s Hokkien Mee? It’s amazing! It’s a world of flavors and textures, and is easily one of the top dishes I have tried this year. I declare it as my favorite Phuketian dish! Since I tasted it, I’ve been daydreaming about it, and I regret that I didn’t order for takeaway. So Hokkien Mee, I’m coming back to Phuket for you!
I hope to return to Mee Ton Poe and also try its Hokkien Noodle Soup and other items. And needless to say, I highly recommend Mee Ton Poe’s Hokkien Mee to you!
